- Starting the conversation: “I wanted to check in with you because you seem pretty down lately.”
- Encourage them to seek help: Offer to help the depressed person find a doctor or therapist and go with them on their first visit.
- Supporting your loved one’s treatment: Having patience is important. Even with optimal treatment, recovery from depression doesn’t happen over night.
- Taking care of yourself: Of course you want to help, but you can only do so much. To avoid burnout and resentment, set clear limits on what you are able to do.
